Dick Flaten was an extraordinary man of God who left behind a legacy of integrity and faithfulness. Exhibiting a contagious devotion to and personal communion with Christ, his life's example and his exposition of the Scriptures reached countless souls for the kingdom of God.
Born in 1930 in Illinois, Dick surrendered his life to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior while attending the university of California at Berkley. He became involved in the same college ministry through which he heard the gospel, at First Presbyterian Church. Dick completed his BA in architecture, then began preparing for vocational ministry, earning a Bachelor of Divinity from Bob Jones University.
Dick joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ at Texas A&M University, during which time he met and married his wife, Ann. Together they served on the Campus Crusade staff at the University of Texas at Austin. From 1960 to 1968, Dick Pastored Branham Lane Baptist Church in San Jose, California. He received a Masters of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1969, after which he was invited to be the founding pastor of a church in Austin, Texas, based on sound biblical exposition. He Pastored Grace Covenant Church for 19 years. The church grew into a dynamic ministry which helped birth other Bible churches.
In 1989, Dick and Ann moved to Dallas, Texas, where they served with the Center for Church Renewal at Fellowship Bible Church North, teaching and leading home and church-based Bible studies. Later Dick accepted a similar position with Exchanged Life Ministries in the Dallas area. He and Ann also taught through the ministry of their church, Park Cities Presbyterian.
Dick's greatest joy in ministry was emphasizing not only the moment-by-moment supernatural resources of the living Christ, but also God's available grace to experience Christ's life. Dick's own life was an authentic testimony to the sufficiency of Christ in daily living, as in 1975 Dick was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a form of cancer. During his remaining 23 years, he counted it a privilege and opportunity to glorify the Lord in his illness, becoming a living example of the reality of Paul's words to the Philippians: "For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
Dick's favorite passage to study, preach, and teach was Romans 6-8, in which Paul most thoroughly establishes the biblical foundation for supernatural Christian living. Dick completed his exposition of the first part of this beloved passage two months before he went to be with the Lord. Dick co-authored the book, The Marvelous Exchange, which is Dick's ongoing ministry to the lives of countless more believers, proclaiming the message that Dick, given the time, would have most wanted to share in each of their homes.
