Fear or Faith Psalm 27:1-3; 18: 30-33, 46-50

Many of the psalms reflect the life experiences of their authors. Read the preface of Psalm 18. The two people mentioned looked at life very differently. David saw life through a strong faith relationship to God. Saul looked at life with a lot of fear and distrust. God never wants His children to live in fear (2 Timothy 1:7). His dealings in our lives are designed to bring assurance, a sense of belonging and significance. The difference between fear and faith can be clearly seen in the lives of David and Saul.

Distinguish fear and faith in:

1. Twisted Perceptions

David trusted God in troubles that were very real. Saul imagines that people were trying to get him when he was in really in safety.

A. Fear infects the mind with Imaginations (Saul)

B. Faith instills the mind with Inspiration (David)

2. Triumphant Peace

Throughout the persecutions, David left his life in God’s hands. Saul took matters in his own hands when things became difficxult.

A. Fear says "I must take charge" (Saul)

Fear says things like “I can’t trust God because I’m not supposed to have all this” or

“I can’t trust people so I have to pretend to be someone I’m not” or

“I start looking at others as someone trying to take what I have.”

B. Faith says, "God is in control" (David)

3. Truth Perversions

David trusted God’s Word. Saul tried to rationalize his way out of disobeying God.

A. Fear looks to self for Rationalization (Saul)

B. Faith looks to God for Relationship (David)

4. Trusted Possessions

David was generous even in times of distress. Saul became jealous and actually created his own distress.

A. Fear look on others with Envy (Saul)

B. Faith looks on others with Empathy (David)
