Text: Three Soldiers At Calvary
Scripture, (Jn.19:23-24)
Introduction, The cross of Calvary will always be among many things
a place of
Contrast, It was a place of Love, yet hate, A place of Salvation,
yet it is here we
Are reminded of our sins, A place of Pardon, yet a place of Punishment.
And there
Was also a Contrast of people their, Political leaders, Reglious
leaders, and even on
The crosses a Good man and bad men. But beneath the cross of Jesus
their were
Soldiers, probably several .But I want to pick three out from
the crowd and look
At these three Soldiers!
(1) THERE WAS THE SOLDIER WHO COVETED JESUS ROBE: (Jn.19; 23-24)
Bailey Smith said he may have been the first person to wear a
Jesus shirt!
How sad it is to think that he had been this close to Jesus and
all he got
Was a shirt! What does this soldier represent?
1. For one thing he shows those so close but yet so far away,
(Mk.12: 34)
2. Secondly he reminds us of those who are only interested in
what
Materal thing Jesus can give them. (Jn.6: 26)
3. Thirdly he reminds us of those who think they are winners,
but are
Really losers, (Lk.16: 19-31) (Lk.12: 16-20)
4. Fourthly he reminds us of those who never know Jesus but after
the
Flesh. (2 Cor.5: 16)
5. Fifthly he reminds us of those who only have enough of Jesus
to talk
about from time to time, but not live for him. (Phil.1: 21)
(2) THERE WAS THE SOLDIER WHO CAUSED JESUS WOUND: (Jn.19:33-37)
It was custom to break the legs of those who had been crucified,
so that they
Would be dead by sundown, But Jesus was already dead! From the
Soldiers
Standpoint there was no reason for his actions! His actions remind
us of
Those who,
1. Hate Jesus for no reason, (Psa.69:4)
2. Harden by life, (Heb. 3:13-14)
3. He was used of God and didn’t even know it, (Jn.19:36)
4. He reminds us of those who trodden under foot the blood,(Heb.10:29)
(3) THERE WAS THE SOLDIER WHO CONFESSED WHO JESUS WAS: (Mt.27:
54) We are told that this Roman Centurion confessed out aloud
that truly this
Was the Son of God!! We know God heard it! We know those with
him heard
It! What was it that would cause him to confess such a thing?
1. He watched the Son of God, (54) Pray, Pardon, Peacefully die.
2. He felt Supernatural Power, (45) darking of the sun, (51) renting
of the veil,
(54) quaking of the earth.
3. He had Spiritual revelation, (Mt.16:17)(1 Cor.12:3)
4. He had the starting of Salvation, (Mt.10: 32)(Rom.10:9)
