WHAT MANNER OF MAN IS THIS JESUS
Matthew 8:23-27
The Sea of Galilee is one of the most treacherous bodies of water
in the
world. The weather is unpredictable, and although the surface
may be
unruffled at one moment, within minutes it can become a raging
tempest. The
Sea of Galilee is about thirteen miles long, and, at its widest
place, about
eight miles from east to west. On the east bank are the Golan
Heights, and
on the west side are mountains with gullies which resemble funnels.
When a
storm builds, the wind is compressed in these narrow valleys,
and almost as
if the powers of nature had become intensely infuriated, the winds
descend
upon the waters with uncontrollable energy.
As the disciples attempt to cross the Sea of Galilee at the command
of
Jesus, there arose a great storm. This was a storm that broke
forth in
furious gusts and with floods of rain. Matthew describes the boat
as it
would appear from shore, as being ?covered? - as it is lost to
sight by the
breaking waves. Mark describes the desperate plight as one on
board knew it,
and says the boat was ?now full.? This was a serious gale which
frightened
a crew who had spent all their lives on the sea.
The amazing feature about the entire situation was that Jesus
slept through
the storm. The thunder was crashing, lightning flashing through
the air, and
waves were hitting the boat. Yet Jesus sleeps on. He must have
been
extremely weary with the exertions of the day, for the shattering
sounds of
that fierce storm failed to awaken him.
However, the moment one of His disciples ask for help, He awakes.
What the
storm could not do, the anguished cry of a frightened disciples
did, in a
moment.
Jesus rises in the stern of the boat and sends His voice in the
howling
darkness, and wind and waves bow at His feet like dogs that know
their
master. There is now a great stillness.
The difference between the great storm and the great silliness
was a great
Saviour. As Jesus lay asleep He showed the weakness of manhood;
but He woke
to manifest the power of indwelling divinity. Just moments before
Jesus was
sleeping because of human exhaustion, but He with divine omnipotence
commands the winds and the waves.
As a result, of what the disciples have seen, they declare, ?What
manner is
man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!? As man
He sleeps in
the hinder part of the ship, but as God he stands at the helm
of the ship
and commands the winds and sea.
What personage. How unlike other men! What a vast, minute display
of power;
and how far exalted above mortals must he be. He spoke to the
winds;
rebuked their raging, and the sea was suddenly calm. The storm
subsided; the
ship glided smoothly; danger fled; and in amazement the disciples
stood in
the presence of Him who controlled the tempests. None but God
could calm the
heaving billows, and scatter the tempest. No scene could have
been more
grand than this display of the power of Jesus. The darkness; the
dashing
waves; the howling winds; the heaving and tossing ship; the fears
and cries
of the seamen; all by a single word hushed into calm repose; all
present an
image of power and divinity irresistibly grand and awful.
WHAT MANNER OF MAN IS THIS JESUS?
I. Jesus is the INCOMPARABLE one
Jesus is unparalleled. Jesus is matchless. Jesus is unique.
Dip the net into the sea of famous names in various fields of
achievement
and comparatives are withdrawn.
A. Greater priest than Aaron - Hebrews 7:23-28 ?And they truly
were many...?
Hebrews 10:11,12 ?And every priest standeth ...?
B. Greater potentate than David
?King of kings and Lord of lords?
C. Greater preacher than John the Baptist
?There standeth one among you, who ye know not; He it is, who
soming
agfter me is perfereed before me, whose sho latchet I am not worthy
to
unloose.?
D. Greater philosopher than Solomon
Matthew 12:6,41,42
E. Greater prophet than Elijah
Jesus -Uncontested in His Worth
Jesus - Unmatched in his Work
Jesus -Unsurpassed in His Worship
The truth is Jesus stands all alone!
II. Jesus is the INCARNATE one
Incarnate means embodied in flesh. I Timthy 3:16 states, ?And
without
controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest
in the
flesh....?
John 1:1-3, 14
Isaiah 9:6 The babe had a beginning, but the son as always been
I John 1:1,2
A. Jesus became man to proclaim God to us - ?He that hath seen
me hath seen
the Father? - John 14:9
B. Jesus became man to present us with an example to follow -
I Peter 2:21
1. Soul-winner?s example
2. Saints? example
3. Sufferer?s example
C. Jesus became man to provide the only effective sacrifice for
sin -
Hebrews 2:9
D. Jesus became man to produce a sympathecit High Priest - Hebrews
2:17 ;
Hebrews 4:14-16 ?Seeing then that we have a great.......?
E. Jesus became man to prepare a qualified judge - John 5:22,27
God will judge men by the man, Jesus. Humanity will be judged
by one who
has entered into human life, who has experienced its sorrows and
joys, hopes
and fears, trials and temptations.
III. Jesus is the INFINITE one
Infinite means without limit, endless, boundless.
A preacher one Sunday was standing outside after church waiting
for his
family when he thought he would have some fun with one of the
children.
Wanting to find out just how much the lad had been learning in
Sunday
School, the pastor asked, ?Son, if you can tell me one thing that
Jesus can
do, I will give you an apple.?
The lad looked a the preacher and replied, ?Preacher, if you can
tell me
one that Jesus can?t do, I will give you a whole truckload of
apples.?
Ephesians 3:19,20
A. Infinite in His ability
Nothing to hard for the Lord!
B. Infinite in His authority
?And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given
unto me in
heaven and in earth.?
Jesus has all the right of absolute authority and all the resources
of
absolute power.
C. Infinite in His atonement
1 John 2:2 ?And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for
ours
only, but also for the sins of the whole world.?
1Timothy 2:4-6 ?Who will have all men to be saved, and to
come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and
one
mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself
a
ransom for all, to be testified in due time.?
IV. Jesus is the IMMUTABLE one.
Immutable means unchanging. Hebrews 13:6 declares, ?Jesus Christ
the same
yesterday, and today, and forever.? In God no change is possible.
A. Jesus is unchanging in His PROMISE to RECEIVE (Matthew 11:28)
John 6:37 ?... him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.?
B. Jesus is unchanging in His PROVISION to RESCUE (I Corinthians
10:13).
Since God is faithful, a fall can never be excused. It is always
our
fault, never God's. Since God is in control of the temptation,
a fall can
never be excused (preventive grace). Since God provides a way
to escape, a
fall can never be excused (protective grace).
C. Jesus is unchanging in His PLAN to RETURN (John 14:1-3)
IV. Jesus is the INDISPENSABLE one (Acts 4:12)
You may go to heaven without money, fame, or talent, but absolutely
no one
goes to heaven without Jesus.
Jesus is the only way out of the dilemma of sin into the delight
of
salvation. Jesus is the only way out of thee final doom of hell
into the
future destiny of heaven.
John 14:6 . Jesus is not a way to heaven, but rather He is the
way to
heaven.
Conclusion:
As the disciples that day saw the wind and the waves obey His
voice, they
remarked, ?What manner of man is this?? These men had long been
acquinted
with the sea and had never observed a storm so imiediately turned
into a
perfect calm long. Wht they observed in this man named Jesus let
them know
that Jesus was not just any odirnary man. He was the God man.
