His Star Matt. 2.1-10
The wise men form the East stood before King Herod and made this announcement Matthew 2:2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
(Born king of the Jews) to Herod who had been appointed king of the Jews more than 30 years before.
4 times this star is referred to in the first 12 verses of Matt. 2.
Think about it. God came down to man, Heaven touched earth, time and eternity intersected, the impossible became the accomplishment of God! PROPHECY became a PROMISE fulfilled. Angles got excited and ran out on the balcony of Heaven and shouted - "Glory to God in the Highest!"
Shepherds hurried to Bethlehem,
Herod ordered all male babies two years old and under to be slaughtered. Because as John said "... the Word became Flesh and dwelt among us." PROPHECY became PERFORMANCE and into the night of earth came the LIGHT of Heaven. Into the night of sin came the PUREST OF HOLY LIGHT.
Who was this following a star. Not Jews but Gentiles not Astrologers but rather astronomers. (traveling for two years).
I. A PROMISED STAR - Numbers 24:17a I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, ...
Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
- Micah 5.2 prophesied the city
- Dan 9 25 prophesied the time
- Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
The angel appears to Mary Luke 1:30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. Luke 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
- Matthew 1:20 angel appeared to Joseph
II. A PECULIAR STAR - Matt 2.7 Herod questioned them about
the star ( unusual, unique, non-orbital star, instead of orbiting around the heaven it traveled straight - to Jesus.
III. A PERSONAL STAR - Matt. 2.2 "We have seen His Star"
IV. A PURPOSEFUL STAR - Matt 2.9 "it stood over the place
where the young child was". - then just as suddenly as it had appeared in the sky it was gone, it just disappeared. Why? The One the wise men worshipped was and is the Star, there is no longer any need to this lesser star.
V. A PRECIOUS STAR - II Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
1 Peter 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
