THE LOST SONG

Psalms 137:1-4

The first mention of a song or singing is in the fifteenth chapter of Exodus. Singing is one of the ways we can worship and praise God. Singing adds to our church services today. Many songs are talked about in the Bible.

1. The Victory Song:

Exodus 15:1 Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

2. The New Song:

Revelation 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

3. The Silent Song:

Psalms 137 In our text the Jews have lost the desire to sing the Lord's song. Backslid people have no desire to sing the Lord's song. Harps, once dedicated to give praise to God, are now hanging silent in the willow tree.

These people like many today:

1. Had lost their VICTORY:

2. Had lost their VISION:

3. Had lost their VOICE:

I. THE REASON FOR SILENT HARPS:

A. THEY WERE OUT OF PLACE: v.1

Many today are out of place, backslidden in this world. Many have gone back into the world and got comfortable there.

Illustration: Near my home a man has about a dozen cows. On occasion you would see a deer with the cows. Now if you see the cows you see the deer, she is out of place but is comfortable with the cows.

B. THEY WERE OUT OF POSITION: v.1b

Many today have sat down and quit.

C. THEY WERE OUT OF PRACTICE: v.1c

Remembered - They forgot God a long time ago. Many today have forgotten about God.

D. THEY WERE OUT OF PLANS: v.2

Hung up their harps - Many today have hung their harps with no plans of serving God. What are your plans for the future do they include God. Did you consult God in planning for the future?

II. THE RESULTS OF SILENT HARPS: vss.3-4

A. GOD'S MESSAGE IS NOT PREACHED:

B. GOD'S METHODS ARE NOT PRACTICED:

C. GOD'S MEN DO NOT PRAY:

III. THE REMEDY FOR SILENT HARPS:

A. REMEMBER CHRIST: Luke 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

B. REMEMBER THE CROSS: Luke 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

C. REMEMBER YOUR CONVERSION: I thank God for a Monday night in 1958 when the Lord saved me and put a new song in my mouth.

Psalms 40:3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

D. REMEMBER YOUR CHURCH: Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Don’t loose your song were to make a joyful noise unto the Lord, and by song is a great way to do that our Lord himself sung a hymn Mark 14:26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.
